Week 36

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe this is my last e-mail to you! This week in math we worked on personal finance. We talked about spending/ saving and lending and giving. We did addition and subtraction problems based on these concepts. We learned we have decisions to make about how we save and spend money. We also learned about what a budget is and that we need to pay our bills, save and spend money.

In writing we finished up our Great White Shark research paper and began working on our second grade memory book. There are lots of fun pages where they show their class, tell about our year together and even write a letter to their future self. I also included a letter to them from me.

In reading we learned about two American animals and created booklets as we answered comprehension questions. We looked at poetry  about animals and spotted the elements of poetry that we learned about earlier in the year. We also created a booklet that showed where we live on the map!

In science we learned about behaviors that help animals defend, obtain, and cope in the wild to survive. We talked about a school of fish, a pack of wolves and a pod of killer whales. We took our assessment on Friday.

It seems like it was just yesterday that I saw your child’s shy, smiling face at the door and now it is time to let them go. They have each grown in many ways. I feel they are ready for the challenges of third grade. We have built relationships that will last beyond my classroom. I am always interested to see the accomplishments of my students in the future. Please keep me updated. I love celebrating them! Always remember- once in my classroom, forever in my heart!

Week 35

 Dear Parents,

This week in math we continued with our graphing unit as we looked at bar graphs and pictographs to ask and solve our own questions. We took our assessment on Thursday. Next we will begin our economics unit to close out the year!

In writing we took three days to create a very special Mother’s Day gift. It touched my heart to read them and I know you will treasure each word your child wrote about you! . We then got back to our research about the Great White Shark. We looked at the information we collected and composed sentences with the information about how they look and where they live.

In reading /social studies we focused on  Cinco de Mayo on Monday. The children were given Tortillas and honey if they wanted to try them. We then focused on the story of Aladdin. We did many fun activities to get ready for our field trip today .We read a scholastic News about a very cute hippo and answered the questions together.

In science we continued on looking at characteristics and behaviors in animals and how they help them get food, water and air to survive. We talked about the benefits of living in groups and camouflage. We learned that some animals actually use tools to get food! We are so interested in this unit!

This week was packed with so many fun activities! I was so proud of my class at the spring concert! They were amazing! We finished our Mother’s Day Gifts, our pillowcases, had Muffins with Moms and went on a field trip! And through all this you and your children spoiled me all week for teacher appreciation week. I loved all the cards, flowers, snacks a hugs I got each day. Your children are the BEST gift!

Week 34

 Dear Parents,

This week in math we have been exploring both pictographs and bar graphs. We have been answering questions, using charts and tally charts to create graphs, and comparing categories within the graphs.

In writing we are continuing to write our rough draft about Great White Sharks! We’ve been amazed at some of the facts we’ve learned. We are including a Table of Cotents and are citing our sources.

In reading/ social studies we read the story Sea Otter Pups and took a comprehension check. We learned to monitor and clarify as we read.We continued learning our economics unit as we learned more about Goods and services. We listened to a BrainPOP Jr. and did a goods/service sort. We read another Scholastic News about a sea otter who was a theif and looked at a live feed of sea otters at an aquarium.

In science we have been exploring animal characteristics through PowerPoints and videos of animals.
