Week 31
Dear Parents,
This week we continued on with learning our two dimensional shapes. We used a chart to recognize polygons that had 3-12 sides and vertices! Our unit on geometric shapes will wrap up next week with an assessment.
We are finishing up our poetry unit and compiling our own poetry books. They have done an excellent job writing original poems and visualizing published poems. Their books are definitely keepsakes.
In reading we began learning about how to research. We used a R.A.N. Chart to discuss what we thought we knew, misconceptions about what we thought we knew, research that proved we were right about what we knew, new learning through research, and wonderings we still had after our research. We discussed the importance of having multiple sources to get a well rounded idea of what we are researching. We will begin a class research project next week.
In science we finished up our unit on physical characteristics, had a reading/ writing science assignment and took our assessment.
In social studies we continued with our map skills Monday and dove into learning how communication, homes, schools, toys/games, and transportation have changed over time. We watched videos, read books , wrote a flip book, and sorted things that were from now and then. This unit will continue next week.
Field day is today! We hope you can come join in the fun and watch your child compete. Look below for the time. Later today I will post pictures on our blog for those of you who cannot come.

Week 30
Dear Parents,
This was a quick , but great week of learning packed into four days. In math we began a unit on solid shapes that will continue into next week. I will be sending home a homework page so that you can see what we are doing and can help reinforce the math vocabulary. We are describing, classifying and analyzing the attributes of spheres, cones, cylinder cubes, rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and pyramids. We are counting their faces, edges, and vertices.
In language we are continuing with our
poetry books as we wrote a poem about eating a fortune cookie. We filled out a sensory chart of our eating experience, then composed our poem. We learned that adverbs tell how, when, or where a verb does its action.
In reading we continued analyzing and visualizing poems and then took our assessment on Thursday. Some of our visualizations will be added to our poetry books.
In science we have been looking at animal characteristics. We have looked at the shape and placement of their eyes, ears and teeth. We have observed their limbs and body coverings and how these things help them survive. We created our own super animal with physical characteristics that will help it survive in the wild and named it.
In social studies we have continued learning map skills, but also focused on the three branches of our government. We read about each branch and created a government tree.

Week 29
Dear Parents,
This was a great week of learning with our field trip to LISDOLA on Tuesday! The children were exposed to several experiences that can only be achieved in outdoor school! We started out with a nature hike with Mrs. B, the outdoor center’s person in charge. She pointed out several signs of animal life, insects and plants. We next went to the amphitheater where we were exposed to animal pelts with facts about the animals. Each group became experts on their animal and presented clues to the other children to see if they could guess their animal fur. After that we went to the center’s patio where we learned about Texas turtles. We have two large turtles that have made their home at the pond. We then moved onto the river model where we could rain on the model and watch how the water traveled and pooled in certain areas as well as formed small streams, then rivers.We then dug in the dirt and created a group landform to rain down on to observe. Our last stop was Bess Bugs. The children got to learn about these insects, their body parts, their habitats and even hold them if they so chose. See our blog for some pictures and a short video.
In math we continued measuring with the metric system and compared lengths of objects by subtracting the difference. We reviewed on Friday: time, perimeter, area, and measurement. Please review telling time to the minute with your child so they are ready on Monday. I will send a practice sheet home.
In reading and writing our focus still has been poetry. In reading we are reading, listening to, and inferring meaning as we visualize some wonderful poems. In writing we have had a chance to write more poems using sensory details. The focus this week is a small moment that gave us a big feeling.
In science we finished up the parts of plants, the function of each part and a plant's basic needs. We began our unit on animals on Wednesday. We are looking at their body parts and animal coverings to see how these things help the animals survive.
In social studies we have continued on with our map skills as well as our state and federal government. We are learning about our leaders, the services they provide for us and how our taxes fund these services.

Week 28
Dear Parents,
We are in the last nine weeks of school. This last nine weeks is my favorite time to watch your children shine. They have been working hard all year and they have this! They know what to do or how to figure things out. We will continue learning and growing until the last day of school! In math we have been learning about area (square units), perimeter (units), and have been measuring with inches, feet , yards, centimeters and meters. We have had a lot of hands on experiences as we measures around the room.
In reading and language our focus has been on poetry. We have been reading poems, inferring what they mean, visualizing with movies in our heads and writing poems. We will be compiling a book of our poems and visualizations at the end of this unit. We are thinking like poets and find poem ideas all around us. Using our senses has made it fun and interesting for our classmates to read our poems.We have been looking for rhyme, repetition, and rhythm in the poems we read.
In science we have been observing,recording, and comparing the physical characteristics of plants. We tried to create a visual representation of a plant and its plant parts.
In social studies we have been working on our map skills as well as learning about our local, state, and federal government. We are learning about our leaders, the services that are provided to us and how these services are paid for by taxes.
* Our campus will be closed to visitors all week due to STAAR testing.

*Tuesday is our field trip to LISDOLA: please bring a sack lunch and a disposable water bottle. Items need to be disposable as they will be throwing everything away after lunch.
