Week 19

 Dear Parents,

It was an exciting week at CRE! The children were finishing up their presents for you, making their own wrapping paper and card. We also had a 5 days before winter break treat each day. Today they come home with my gift, a chapter book! We had our movie day on Wednesday and watched the Polar Express while eating popcorn and drinking hot chocolate in our comfy pajamas.. We had our fabulous Winter party run by our room moms, Amber Rice and Yessidey Stevens. Thank you so much for making their party so memorable! Thank you also to the parents who came to visit our room during the party. You made it very special for our class. On Friday we had our annual sing along and recognition rally!

Even with all the excitement we accomplished lots of learning this week. In math we reviewed for our assessment over place value, ordering and comparing numbers and placing numbers on a number line. We took our assessment on Tuesday.

In language we have been working on personal communication writing. We firat learned how to write a note and now are writing friendly letters. We revised and edited them this week and will write the final copy upon our return.

In reading we read and compared Gingerbread Baby with The Gingerbread Man. We discussed how they were alike and how they were different. We read a scholastic News article called “ Holiday Bakery” and took a comprehension check.

In science we wrapped up our learning with a talk read talk write activity about natural water sources. We took our assessment on Wednesday. We are still having fun playing a game where the children are challenged to recognize pictures of water sources by their description.

I want to say that I am overwhelmed by your kindness since the passing of my mother. You also spoiled me this Christmas with your thoughtful gifts and messages. I absolutely love my job and cherish each day I spend guiding and teaching your children! I wish you all many blessings this winter break and throughout the New Year!

Week 18

 Dear Parents,

It was great to get back to be with my class. They did a great job while I was gone ( due to the passing of my mother) and worked hard with Mrs. Stevens who is a veteran, second grade teacher from Coyote Ridge. They were in excellent hands! In math this week we focused on place value. We represented numbers with sheets, strips, and singles with pictures, then showed what would happen if we added or subtracted 10 or 100. Then we tried it doing the change mentally. Hey caught on quickly! We also found missing numbers on a number line. They were well prepared to do this. Last they had to place numbers on an open number line. We would find a mid-point between two numbers and then place the numbers in order from least to greatest where they should be on the open number line. An open number line has only a beginning number and an ending number. The children placed numbers between them.

In writing we finished our papers explaining why a certain holiday is our favorite one. These are on display in the hallway if you come to our holiday party next week. We then started our unit on writing messages and letters. This class loves to write to people they love! They will deliver their messages and letters once they are in final copy form.

In reading we learned all about nonfiction features and read Wilma Rudolph. We searched for these features in that story as well as many other nonfiction books. On Friday we read a story about Gingerbread houses and took a comprehension check.

In science we have been learning all about natural bodies of water. We learned the names of several fresh and salt water sources and played a SWAT game to practice knowing the visual representations of these water sources. We looked at examples of fresh and salt water, drew, described and compared them. We listened to some brainpop Jr. information and on Friday we did a lalk read, talk write activity.

Week 16

 Dear Parents,

This week in math we continued learning about the concept of multiplication as repeated addition. We drew equal groups to solve word problems. We learned that the first number in a multiplication sentence represents how many groups there are and the second number stands for how many objects are in each group, thus we draw very different pictures for 2X6 and 6X2. We also began division as splitting up objects equally into groups. Lastly we viewed division as repeated subtraction. Our assessment was taken on Thursday and on Friday we practiced what we learned by doing a fun activity with Cookie Crisp cereal. We practiced both multiplication and division.

In writing we worked on some special Thanksgiving gifts for you! I know you will treasure them! We also continued our writing process to finish up any pieces that are yet unfinished. We go for quality- and add the grades when all are turned in.

In reading we listened to a Brainpop Jr. about the first Thanksgiving. We discussed the questions ahead of time so that we knew what information we were listening for. We read a Scholastic News article called  Time for thanks and discussed what we are grateful for. We listened to Thanksgiving at the Tarleton’s and discussed our own family traditions. We listened to A Turkey for Thanksgiving, completed a story map and answered questions about the story. On Friday we watched Arthur’s Thanksgiving.

In science we took our assessment over position and movement and began our unit about rocks. We are having fun being scientists observing our rock and writing about their physical properties. We then compared our rock with a partner’s rock to fill out a double bubble map. We finished up the week with a talk/read/talk/write activity!

Week 15

 Dear Parents,

This week in math we began by building with blocks. We built apartments that had the same number of rooms on each floor. The children built and then filled in a chart showing how many rooms were in the building when it had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 floors! Then we began the concept of multiplication as repeated addition. On Friday we used just multiplication sentences.

In writing some of us are finishing up our imaginative stories as we begin our explain why we like our favorite holiday paper. We narrowed done our favorite holiday on a circle map, then used a flow map to show 4 reasons why we like that holiday. We will continue working on it through next week.

In reading we read a book review written by a student. We will be making our own reviews as a choice during guided reading. We read the story Going Places and took our comprehension check on Thursday. On Friday we read a Scholastic News Article called “Sky High Veterans!”

In science we had many experiments with objects going down a ramp. We tracked their movements as curved lines, straight lines, slides, rolls, and spins. We took our unit assessment on Friday.

*It’s time for the 21-Day Challenge FINAL survey!  If your student signed up and participated, please complete the final survey to complete the challenge.  https://kids-teaching-kids.com/locations/ktk-north-texas/

Week 14

  Dear Parents,

Unfortunately I ended up with the flu and was out Monday-Wednesday. I really missed my class but was able to secure a former second grade CRE teacher as my sub so I know for sure they were in expert hands. In math we continued with measurement. We measured lengths in metrics units. We used reasoning while measuring and measured 2 to 3 segments to get a total measurement. We reviewed and took our assessment on Friday.

In writing we revised our imaginative paper after seeing examples of how we could vary our sentence length and add details of showing emotions or character gestures. We learned about verbs- present, past, and future tenses. We then made sure our stories stayed in one verb tense. On Thursday and Friday we learned about who veterans are and how we are soon going to honor them on Veterans Day. We wrote an acrostic poem using the word veteran.

In reading we listened to the story I Need a Monster  on Monday and made a story map. We also read A Crow, a Mouse, a Lion, Oh My! We looked at the elements of drama and took a reading checkpoint over it. We looked at figurative language in the story Hollywood Chicken.

In Science we did a talk, read, talk, write activity about magnets. We used marbles and paint to show how we could apply force in different ways to change the motion of a marble. On Thursday and Friday we experimented with several objects to describe their motion down a ramp. Did they spin, roll, or slide? We also looked at the physical characteristics of the objects and discussed how they affected the movement.

*We are completely out of classroom snacks. If you would like to donate some individually packaged goldfish for the children who forget theirs it would be appreciated.

*Good Afternoon CRE Families!

Week 13

 Dear Parents,

In math this week we started our unit on measuring. We started with estimating paperclips, then inches, feet and yards. Next we learned the metric unit of centimeters. We had fun having a scavenger hunt to find objects about one inch, one foot, one yard, and one centimeter.

In writing we started our imaginative stories. We each chose an interesting character and setting. Then we mapped out our beginning, middle, and end. Then we began writing our rough draft making sure we described our character, and setting. In our middle we needed a problem, then our ending had a solution.

In reading we read a Scholastic News article about what to do with those mushy pumpkins we may have after Halloween. We learned about composting, what to put in a compost bin, and  how to turn it over to help the material break down. They were amazed that using this new soil puts nutrients back into the garden to help our flowers and plants grow. We then started learning about fictional stories like folktales and  fairytales. Friday was spider Day as we read the story Diary of a Spider. We created a spider cinquain poem.

In science we finished our unit on sound by using our EDP process to solve a problem. Children were put in 7 groups, given the problem and a list of possible materials. As a group they decided what materials to “buy” to create an invention to solve the problem. Later in the week we began our unit on force and motion. We observed the effect of magnets on iron filings. We used magnets to “dig” for buried treasure in sand. This activity helped us sort materials into magnetic and nonmagnetic materials.

  • You can  check the above Specials Calendar for our PE days to wear Tennis Shoes
  • If you have a special Veteran who would like to attend and be honored on Veterans Day- Please see the above Flyer as to how to RSVP.
  • Fall Picture Make up Day is Nov. 2nd
  • Please donate to our food drive! So far this week our class collected 3 cans of food.

*Fall Festival: Thank you families for all your support with our fantastic Fall Festival last Friday.  We loved seeing so many families here!  The Gift of Time with teachers bidding is still OPEN until Sunday, October 30th.  Please support our school and let your child spend some extra fun time with a teacher!  See the link to bid on Gifts of Time: Gifts Of Time Bidding - Open through 10/30/2022

Week 12

 Dear Parents,

In math this week we have been working on time. We started with time to the minute and realized we needed to slow down. We then reviewed time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour and by 5’s. Today we were ready for time to the minute. We also learned what  time of day A.M. and P.M. are and talked about specific times and what we are doing at that time. We realized that we eat lunch at 11:30 A.M. We learned that the area of a shape is the inside. We measure the area in square units.

In writing we continued writing our narratives and then mid-week began brainstorming our next writing project- an imaginative story! We listened to several stories, brainstormed characters and settings, then planned out our beginning, middle and end. We learned to show our character’s emotions in our writing through actions and descriptions.

In reading we read a true story about a baker who helped his country. This biography showed the class what a person of character does. We learned to synthesize information and organize the important information in order. We took our comp check on Thursday. Friday was pumpkin day. Be sure to ask your child about all our fun activities.

In science we planned a group sound project and took our comprehension check.

*CRE "Stuff the Pumpkin" Food Drive

Coyote Ridge ES is joining the other schools in LISD in our annual food drive for families in need. Hunger hampers a student’s ability to learn, concentrate and perform well. In 2009, Texas was one of five states with the highest rate of “food insecure” children under 18. The Stuff the Pantry drive, a joint effort between Christian Community Action (CCA), Metro Relief, and Lewisville ISD, will help provide food for LISD families throughout the year.

We will be collecting food donations during Red Ribbon week, and the week after  (October 24 - November 4th).  We will collect food and keep score this entire week! We will see which class has the most donations by the end of the week!

The following items are worth 2 points:

  • Pie Filling
  • Canned Fruit
  • Canned Vegetables
  • Evaporated Milk
  • Canned Yams
  • Instant Potatoes

All other items are worth 1 point each.

The class with the most points will receive extra recess!! We can’t wait to see who will win!

Where do we put the food donations? The Student Lighthouse Team will be in charge of counting and collecting all food items from individual classrooms. Please have your child bring his/her items to their classrooms, and collections will take place at each room every day.

If you are donating large numbers of items that can't be easily carried to the classrooms, you may clearly label the lot with the teacher's name and bring them to the front office. Thank you in advance if you're able to assist in this effort to help out families in our community!

Week 11

 Dear Parents,

This week in math we focused on the many kinds of word problems. We read the problems. Put the important information in a beginning, middle and end format. Then we placed that information in our number sentence. After that, we filled in our part/part/whole box to help us decide what process we would use to solve the problem. (addition or subtraction) We had so much fun solving lots of problems! Just ask them about the pringle Ringle!

In writing we continued writing our narratives, editing, revising and making our published work. We have a couple more days to work on these individual projects. Next we will work on fiction, imaginative stories! I can’t wait to see what creativity ends up on paper.

In reading we read stories and focused on the central idea as well as the  themes of these great books. Friday was bat day. We got bat rings and listened to the book Stella Luna. We put story cards in order and thought about how bats and birds are alike and different.

In science we had more fun investigations with sound, using tuning forks. We all got to feel the vibrations and discussed how the soun energy moved objects. We also did a talk read talk write about all three kinds of energy.

*There is a new feature for attendance note submissions. Parents can now use this link Attendance Note Submission (lisd.net) to submit doctors notes, personal notes, and etc.

Week 10

Dear Parents,

This week in math we continued working on our two digit subtraction, with and without regrouping. We took our assessment on Thursday. Please continue to support this skill at home. It is difficult and as we move to our next unit, there will not be as much practice at school. We do not want them forgetting these steps. Please practice time to the minute and counting money. This will help us when we hit those units later in the year.

In writing the children are excited to be finishing up their narratives about the first day of school and writing one of their choice. I can’t wait to see what they’ve written!

In reading we read The Important Book and modeled a class book after this. We are writing about something important to us and why that person or thing is important. This reinforces the concept of the central idea of a story. We also read The Big Red Lollipop and took a comprehension check over it.

In science we are focusing on energy- light, heat, and sound. Our main focus is sound and how it is produced with vibrations and waves. We experimented with cups, rubber bands and paper tubes to see which helped the sounds travel the farthest, how it affected the volume as well as pitch.

From Mrs. Hernandez our librarian: Storybook Pumpkin Patch

You are invited to be part of our Storybook Pumpkin Patch!  What is this you ask, well let me tell you!   Start with a pumpkin and then use your imagination and your creativity to turn your pumpkin into a book character.  You can use paint, props or anything else you can think of!  A plastic or foam pumpkin works great, but really any pumpkin will be great!

If you are using a real pumpkin, please NO CARVING!  Even a small hole will cause the pumpkin to rot quickly!!!!!

Please bring your Pumpkin to the library the week of October 17th - October 21st.  I would like to have all participating pumpkins in so we can start our Pumpkin Patch visits the following week.  Fill out the pumpkin form (click here for the form or pick up a paper copy in the library) so it can be displayed next to your pumpkin.  You may also include the book to be displayed next to your pumpkin!

All pumpkins need to be picked up between Oct 31st or they will be thrown away.

  • Author Rosemary Wells will be visiting CRE! See the attached flyer to see how you can purchase a book.

From Ms. Olivera, our ESL Teacher:

Dear Coyote Ridge Parents,

As a school we value and treasure our students' culture.  We make it a point to share and learn about each other so we can better understand and love one another.  We would love for you and your child to create a multicultural paper doll to display in the hallways around the school.  We love learning and sharing students' family traditions, culture, and ancestry!  Attached to this letter is an instruction sheet and a cardstock doll. Below is a picture of examples of completed paper doll projects.  When the doll is complete, please return it to school with your child!  We will feature the dolls and the information sheets throughout the school! Please return the doll and the information sheet back to the school by October 28th.

*This is Coyote Ridge’s 7th year using the Leader in Me Program. In order to continue growth and learning at home, we will send home a newsletter each month that will focus on a different habit. By the end of the year we will have discussed all 8 Habits at school and home. If your family participates in ALL 8 Newsletters, you will be showcased in our school as a Lighthouse Family!

  • In your child’s Friday Folder is the October Habit Newsletter. Attached to the newsletter is an activity that corresponds with the monthly habit of October, Habit 1: Be Proactive. There is also a QR code that you can scan and listen to a story with your child and ask discussion questions given from the newsletter. Please assist your child in completing the activity and sign/return the activity sheet to their homeroom teacher by Wednesday, October 12th
  • October 12th is Be Proactive Day! We want to see the entire school wear YELLOW for Habit 1 on Wednesday!
  • We will be tracking grade level participation for returning the activity sheet. The grade level with the highest percentage of participation for October will receive extra recess!

Week 9

 Dear Parents,

We took our math assessment over two digit addition with and without regrouping. The children have this skill learned, but now we have started two digit subtraction with and without regrouping. This becomes very confusing for them. A homework page came home tonight. Only about 2/3 of my class feels confident about doing this new skill. Please help your child work on subtracting  as well as adding. It is important that they are clear on how to do the steps of each kind of problem.

I graded their first narrative writing and was so pleased with how far they all have come in their writing skills. We are now working on a narrative about our first day of school. I love reading all about their feelings and what they remember about our first day together. We are taking these to final copy as well.

In social studies we learned all about Johnny Appleseed. We had an apple party in his honor. The children tried freeze dried apples, apple sauce, apple juice, and pieces of all f our favorite kinds of apples (with a little caramel dipping sauce, of course!) They had so much fun learning about this good citizen and tasting apples.

In reading we read the story, The Great Fuzz Frenzy and took a comprehension test. We also learned about American Heritage Day and created a color poem.

In science we began our new unit on energy. We are investigating through stations with sound energy. We are still testing our boats. This class is full of top notch engineers as their boats do not sink! Right now Angelina is winning. Her boat held 221 pennies!

Here are some important things coming up:

*1. It is time to have our Fall Conferences. They begin next week. Use this link to find a time that we can meet either by phone or in person. Week 8

 Dear Parents,

We are doing a great job of learning how to add two digit numbers with and without regrouping. Please continue to support this difficult skill at home. I want this to become ingrained in their memory as it becomes confusing when we start subtracting with regrouping.

In writing we are finishing up a final copy of our personal narrative and beginning another one by mapping our writing before we draft on a graphic organizer. We are thinking through our account of our first day of school in a beginning, middle, and end format. We are practicing writing good opening and closing sentences. I was so excited about their creativity as they began drafting their beginnings.

In reading we learned all about Freedom Week and Constitution Day.  We signed our own classroom constitution, learned about the history of our flag and researched 4 American Symbols.

In science we took our unit assessment and ended the unit by changing and combining matter to build a boat. The goal was to be able to hold up 10 pennies without sinking. So far Donovan’s boat is in the lead as it took 198 pennies to sink his boat. More boats will be tested on Monday.

Week 7

 Dear Parents,

In Math this week we took our Topic 1 Assessment. Your children did a great job! On Tuesday we began adding two digit numbers by adding the tens and ones mentally. It really helped to put T for tens and O for ones over the digits we were adding. At first the ones were added to equal one digit numbers. Later in the week we were adding two digit numbers with regrouping of our ones. We used ten frame boxes as well as unifix cubes to see what actually happens when we regroup. In the ten frames we would build our two numbers and move our counters to make a ten. It is really easy to add ten to a number, just ask your child. We also worked some problems vertically. We did a few at a time with me running to check to make sure every child could get the right answer independently. They did a great job! I was so proud of all of their effort.

In writing we are working on two pieces. We are finishing up our books using a real author as a mentor and we began writing a narrative about recess. We will take the narrative through the writing process.

In Reading we connected to kindness week with our stories. First we read Being a Good Citizen. We created a class circle map of what makes us a good citizen. Then Lilly became our first Leader of the week. She shared her poster, then we discussed what makes Lilly a good citizen. I am looking for next week’s leader, but four children still need to turn in their posters. We watched a video called “ Get Involved” and talked about how we can get involved in our school and community. We read a scholastic News article called “We Are Good Citizens” and discussed the right choices children could make using 4 different scenarios. We Read 10 Black Dots and The Dot on International Dot Day. We then created pictures using 10 Dots. It was wonderful to watch a video of Peter H. Reynolds drawing and painting a picture with dots. Last, we watched a video “All About Elephants” and worked on a Building Community page as a class.

In Science we had many chances to watch matter change. We had a challenge to choose materials to keep an ice cube from melting. We timed how long it took each cube to melt. We were surprised that an ice cube surrounded by cloth in a plastic cup beat the thermal cup. We also put a gobstopper in a cup of water and timed four different observations. Both the water and the gobstopper looked different every time. We watched videos and wrote down information we learned on a graphic organizer. We finished the week with a talk read, talk write activity.
