Week 24

 Dear Parents,

It was so great to see your children on Monday and hear about the adventures of last week. It was challenging, but we all made it! We got right back to work at school. In math we focused on two and three digit word problems and subtraction. We used visuals (model form/with blocks drawn for ones, tens, and hundreds ) to connect  the  problem and regrouping. In reading we are focused on researching famous Americans like Irma Rangel, Theodore Roosevelt and Thurgood Marshall. The children had fun using facts4me to do their research. In writing we worked on our middle of year writing sample as well as learned about adverbs. In science we took our assessment about objects in the sky and began our unit on weather. We have a weather station all set up and plan to be meteorologists over the next few days. We also celebrated  Digital Learning Day and were able to use our ipads to learn digitally during guided reading as a rotation choice. We began making our videos for open house week which will begin on March 9th.

Week 23

 Dear Parents,

We focused all week on solving word problems and three digit addition with regrouping. They know what to do, but are making addition mistakes. Practicing our fact cards is an immense help. Your child will benefit from having these memorized as they progress to third grade.

In writing we have been working on a research paper about Helen Keller. We took our notes which we wrote on sticky notes and organized them in a timeline of her life. We then came up with our own original sentences about those facts. Last we added time order words to help our paper flow. They are really doing a fantastic job with this research unit. We continue to work on map skills using our compass rose and map key to answer questions. In science we are learning about all the objects in our day and night skies and how those things appear to change and move. We are discovering that all is not what it appears to be. We had an excellent Kindness Week. Discussing all the ways we can be kind at both home and school. On Thursday we celebrated Lunar New Year. We read a scholastic News article about it, answered questions, read a book and made a banner. We also had so much fun eating long noodles with chopsticks! They are supposed to bring us good luck. We had a fortune cookie as well, and read our fortunes.

Week 22

 Dear Parents,

We had another wonderful week of learning activities together as we started the month of February. In math we were focusing on solving the many different kinds of word problems. It is important for the children to be able to read and understand what the problem is asking them to do and then use our strategies to solve those problems. We had a break from the problem solving as we practiced adding with regrouping through a scoot around the room and played add 9 or 10 Bingo. On 100th Day we flipped a coin 100 times, raced a partner to 100 by rolling a die and did 100 exercises throughout our day. We also counted out the pieces of our 100 piece snack. In writing we finished up our poetry unit and began our unit on research. We are doing a class research paper on Helen Keller. They are learning what the important parts of a biography are. We also wrote a paper about what we will be doing when we are 100 years old. In reading we read a story about Helen Keller, focused on the central idea and looked for the supporting details. In Social studies we focused on our map skills as we learned how symbols represent different things on a map. We studied map keys to see what some of these symbols were. We also learned about Groundhog Day and had a Groundhog Day snack. In science we took our unit assessment about natural and manmade resources. We began our unit on Objects in the sky. I sent home a two week homework paper. The children are to track what they see in the sky from Feb. 1st-14th to earn 6 stickers for their chart!

  • We are in need of more glue sticks. Please send some to school. We could also use the square sticky notes if you would like to donate some for our research project.
