Some Pre-run dance Moves!

Boosterthon Funrun 2019!

Literacy/Math Night was a success! Anabel, Analise and Veer led our stations!

Week 29

Dear Parents,
In math we finished up our unit on comparing numbers within 1,200. The children ordered the numbers and compared them using greater than, less than, and equal to signs. We now have begun fractions. We are focusing on halves, fourths, and eighths. The children recognize that some object divided equally into parts are fractions. The pieces all need to be the same size and shape. We are talking about how many pieces there are and if one is shaded in, what we call that one piece: one half, one fourth, or one eighth.
In writing we have continued reading and writing poems. We look for rhyme, repetition, or rhythm as we read a poem. We have been visualizing as we read poems and draw the picture the poem paints in our head. Poetry can be so much fun as we write about objects, people, and moments that are close to our heart.
In social studies we are continuing on with our map skills. We watched a Brainpop Jr. video about map keys, took a quiz and then followed directions using our compass rose to find a buried treasure.
In science we continued to learn the functions of the parts of a plant as we watched our biomes grow. We discovered that the grass seed loved the wet biome, but our lima beans began to mold instead of grow. We replanted the lima beans and gave it a second try! Being a scientist means learning from our mistakes and trying something new! We took our assessment of this unit on Friday.
Thank you for participating in our Boosterthon Funrun fundraiser! We couldn't do it without your support. Your funds will directly benefit our school and your children!

Learning is fun at LIDOLA!

Week 28

Dear Parents,
What a great week we had after coming back from Spring Break refreshed! We had our field trip to LISDOLA on Tuesday.  Thank you to Charisma Clarke for coming along to help with these activities! Upon our return to school we went to our Boosterthon Pep Rally. I sent you some pictures from our kick off!
In math we have been comparing and ordering numbers up to 1,200. We ordered them from greatest to least, least to greatest and compared them using the greater than, less than, or equal to signs. We seem to be understanding these concepts as there are very few corrections.
In writing we have begun our poetry unit. We are enjoying listening to and writing different types of poems. We are collecting our original poems and poem reflections to make a poetry book. We will learning about rhyme, rhythm, and repetition and how these can make our poems more interesting.
In reading we are visualizing and inferring as we read poetry. We created a visualizing project that had two parts. The poem painted a picture in our mind, then quickly changed that picture in the last line of the poem. Ask us about our ten bags and how we had to use inferences to guess what was inside.
In Social Studies we have begun our economics unit. We are learning what it means to be paid for our work habits. We are also learning that sometimes not doing the right thing could end up in a fine.
In science we began our unit on plants. We created a biome in a bag. We are observing our bags and can’t wait until our chosen seeds begin to sprout. We also dissected a petunia to observe the parts of the plant. We discussed the main purpose of each part. We did an investigation with celery and colored water. We made predictions, but were still surprised at what happened! Ask your child about this fun activity.

*Coyote Ridge will be popping into spring by hosting a Literacy and Math Curriculum night on Tuesday, March 26thfrom 5:30- 7:00 PM. Choose from over a dozen games and activities that involve math and literacy skills. Popcorn will be served to all students who participate! Come enjoy this free family fun event on Tuesday. We hope to see you there!

Our Community Building Groups

The Recognition Rally was successful!

Anabel Sebastian, Habit 6

The Seven Habits

Recognition Rally: Veer Patel, Habit 1

Week 27

Dear Parents,
We have started our unit on showing numbers up to 1,200 in different ways. The children dove right in and seemed to enjoy the switch from three digit subtraction! We also worked on a word problem to be shown many different ways. This was put on display at open house.
In writing we have been focusing on imaginative stories. Some of us went on to write our own folktale. We chose an animal and came up with a creative way to explain why the animal has a certain feature such as: Why does the Octopus have 8 legs.
In reading we continued learning about legends, and trickster  tales. We listened to these types of folktales, discovered what was unique about each, and created story maps. We also enjoyed presenting our timelines! Thank you for helping your child with this precious keepsake from second grade. They were on display for you to enjoy at open house.
In social studies we focused on the three kinds of communities. We planned with our group to create our chosen type, either urban, suburban, or rural! They synergized and built together to create a community they could be proud of!
In science we wrapped up our unit on weather. We finished our documentation of our nine days as meteorologists and took our assessment.
A big thank you to all who came to our open house! If you could not make it, some of your child's work went home in a keepsake  pocket.

Week 26

 Dear Parents,
We finished up our three digit subtraction unit and took our assessment on Friday. The children feel very comfortable regrouping  these three  digit subtraction problems. They even wrote a paper explaining how to do one of these problems!
In writing we are working on writing a Pourquoi Folktale. The children have chosen their topic and are busy mapping out their stories. We are going back to check that we add sensory details and show emotions through gestures.
In social studies we have been learning about the three kinds of communities: suburban, urban, and rural. We wrote about our favorite kind of community and broke up into four groups. We will be planning a community together, bringing in recyclables from home, and possibly some toys that will help us show things we see in our community. These lovely communities will be in the hall for you to view at open house.
In reading we continue to learn about the different folktales such as Fables, Myths, and Legends. The children are enjoying listening to as well as reading these stories. They are using graphic organizers to complete story maps.
In science we continue to be meteorologists as we chart the weather for nine days. When we are done, we will look for patterns in the weather. We will go back and look at our temperature graph to see how many warm days/cold days there were. We will ask questions such as : How did the cloud cover affect the temperature. We continue to read, talk and write about the weather, the tools we use to observe the weather and the changes we see in the weather. We discuss how these changes affect us every day.
  • Timeline projects are due. Make sure your child has written a complete sentence (starting with a capital letter and ending with a period) on the card for each year of his/her life. I can’t wait to see these wonderful keepsakes!

*On Open House night (next Thursday) we can’t wait to show your our work! There are two other special things that I want to make you aware of which will be available to you that night. There will be a parent pride wall on the bulletin board by the nurse’s office. Please stop by to write on the board something about your child. What makes you proud of your child?  How do you see him/her using the Seven Habits at home? Also, there will be ipads in our classroom and computers set up in the computer lab for you to take a parent survey about the Leader in Me program at our school. We are on our way to becoming a Lighthouse School and we need your feedback on this important survey.

* Our March focus is Habit 5. Please have your child complete the activity at the bottom of the page, make sure you, the parent, sign it and return it to school by next Wednesday. Some families are on their way to becoming Lighthouse Families!
