Week 10

Dear Parents,
This week began our second nine weeks. In math we made the transitioned from using manipulatives to add (a two digit number to a one digit number) to writing the problem in boxes that were provided. We added the ones first and  learned how to regroup then add the tens. Thank you for checking your child’s math homework to see his/her progress with this new skill.
In writing we finished up our personal narratives, and took them through the writing process and are publishing them now. Next week we will begin writing imaginative stories that will have a beginning, middle, and end.
In reading we learned that writers organize their stories to serve a purpose. We read an interesting story about a baker who may have helped us win the Revolutionary War. Yes, everyone can make a difference. We also learned how to read a story, synthesize the information, and come up with a big picture after thinking about all the important details. We think as we read!
In science we continued on with our unit on combining matter. We worked with partners to choose materials to make a plan for a bird house. We considered the properties of the chosen materials to explain why they would be a good choice. The students had the option of using Draw and Tell or ChatterKid to explain how they planned their birdhouses and justified their choices. We took our assessment on Thursday.
*Lunch for the next week will be 11:45- 12:15. ( or as soon as we get back from the Aquatic Center.)

* Please send your $3.00 donation for our class basket for the Fall Festival Auction. I have only had 9 donations so far. The second grade teachers are also auctioning a gift of time at the silent auction. We will have an ice cream sundae  party and watch a movie after school one day soon. You child gets to choose a friend to attend the party with them.

Week 9

Dear Parents,
This Week in math we finished up our unit on addition and subtraction stories as well as adding and subtracting on a 100s chart. We took our assessment on Thursday. Next week we will begin our unit on two digit addition which we will learn to solve with regrouping.
In reading we focused on theme as well as continuing to ask questions and monitor as we read. Please make sure your child is reading each night Monday- Thursday and are filling out their reading log. This is a homework assignment. They turn in their folders to me on Friday.
In writing we took another personal narrative through the writing process. They are getting really good at planning out their story on a flow map. We make sure there is a beginning, middle and end. We always start with a topic sentence and end with a concluding sentence. We make sure to go back to edit for spelling and punctuation and revise by adding details.
In science we continued on with our unit on changing and combing matter. We realized that as we combine matter, the matter can do a new job that each of the pieces cannot do alone. We talked about choosing matter based on its properties to do a job.

Week 8

Dear Parents,
This Week we continued working on two digit addition and subtraction. With addition we used our ten frames and  our hundreds charts to add the numbers. With subtraction we began by building the numbers with base ten blocks then subtracted tens. On Friday we found what number when added to a given number equaled 100 by using our base ten blocks. These activities gives us a strong understanding of what it means to add and subtract two numbers.
In reading we learned about Texas symbols and made a book. We also learned about point of view. We read a two stories and looked for evidence that showed us if a story was written in first person or third person point of view. We also showed out learning by answering comprehension questions and filling out a graphic organizer to prove that we know how to recognize point of view. On Friday we worked on our leadership notebook as we focused on habit two, begin with the end in mind.
In writing we continued with our personal narratives. We planned them on a flow map then began revising and editing them. We are taking them to final copy.
In science we continued changing matter through cutting, bending, and breaking. We even designed paper airplanes and chose our matter for this project carefully as we each wanted our plane to fly the farthest. Check out our blog for a video of our test flight by clicking on the blue link in my signature line.

October Habit Newsletter
This is Coyote Ridge’s 4th year using the Leader in Me Program. In order to continue growth and learning at home, we will send home a newsletter each month that will focus on a different habit. By the end of the year we will have discussed all 7 Habits. If your family participates in ALL 7 Newsletters, you will be showcased in our school as a Lighthouse Family!
In your child’s Friday Folder is the October Goals Newsletter. Attached to the newsletter is an activity that encourages students to reflect on which of the 7 Habits they would like to practice most throughout the school year. Please assist your child in completing the activity and sign/return the sheet to their homeroom teacher by Wednesday, October 9th.

Lighthouse Family Recognition
Thank you to all for participating in our 7 Habits Newsletters during the 2018-2019 school year. Congratulations to the students and families who completed ALL 7 Habits Newsletters! If you completed all 7 Newsletters you are a Coyote Ridge Lighthouse Family! Throughout this week, students were recognized on the announcements and given an award. See the attachment for the 2018-2019 Lighthouse Families! Make it your family’s goal to complete all 7 Newsletters for the 2019-2020 school year!
