Welcome to my blog! My name is Beth Carpenter! I am a 2nd grade teacher at Coyote Ridge Elementary. I majored in Early Childhood Education and have taught for 22 years. I have taught grades K- 3 which gives me a unique ability to know where my second graders fit within those grades. Teaching is more than a profession to me, it is a calling. Quality Coyotes

Week 27

Dear Parents,
We finished the nine weeks today. Grades will be put in by next Monday and you will be able to view your child’s report card on line next Wednesday. For those of you who requested paper copies in Skyward at the beginning of the year, you will find your child’s report card in his/her Friday folder which will go home on Wednesday due to the short week. Today We had our end of the nine week assembly and presented many awards. The two students chosen to be Quality Coyotes in our room are Bella and Bryson! Congratulations to them both for their hard work this nine weeks.
We completed our math unit on money and patterns in numbers. Our ten days of weather data collecting also ended today. We have several evaporation experiments that we will continue to watch over the next several days to see which containers evaporate the quickest. We are learning to write sentences with the trait of fluency in mind as well as varying sentence length. We have learned the difference between learning information from a book and drawing an inference with the words, pictures and our background knowledge. It has been a great week of learning even though we caught a little Spring fever because of the nice weather.

*STAAR Testing next week: “To ensure the secure testing environment, the campus will be closed to all visitors on Monday, 3/30 and Tuesday, 3/31. This includes no visitors for lunch, volunteering, etc… Thank you for your understanding and support for all of our students!”

Pop Tops for Charity Thank You Letter

Fun with Lucky Charms Math, YUM!

Week 26

Dear Parents,
It was a wonderful week of learning! The children came back tired from all their activities over Spring Break, but ready to learn. It was great to see a lot of you for open house! The children love to show you all they have learned and created during the year. If you were unable to come, your child’s portfolio will be coming home this Friday. The work that is on display in the hallway will come home at a later date. These items can be added to your child’s portfolio as you receive them. Pieces of work have been saved since the beginning of second grade. You will be able to see the growth your child has made so far. Next Friday is the end of the 3rd nine weeks. One more nine week period of learning left in second grade! As the weather gets nicer, please help me keep your children on track with their homework as well as their math and reading logs. I will continue to have them work to their best ability until the very last day of school. I want each of my students well prepared for third grade so that they will have a successful year.
In math this week we learned about adding ten more/ten less or one hundred more/one hundred less to a number. We even celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with Lucky Charm Math! In science we have begun our unit on weather. We will be using weather tools, observing the weather and collecting weather data for ten days. In social studies we  finished up our unit on economics. In language arts we are looking at what good authors do in their writing and finishing up our lessons on adjectives.

* Thank you to those of you who sent in soda pop tops. We collected them for the Ronald McDonald House. We turned them into my Aunt’s business where it is one of their charities. They wrote us a thank you. My aunt visited our class in September when she had told them about saving the tops from soda cans. On their own my students said they would like to help. We have collected two zip lock bags full this year. I am so proud of this thoughtful group of students!

Week 25

Dear Parents,
This week we have been busy finishing up our projects and putting our work into portfolios for Open House. We were disappointed it had to be canceled. The new date for Open House will be March 19th from 5:30-7:00. We cannot wait to show you all of our hard work. It is amazing how wintry the weather has gotten, but the children love playing in the snow.
We are having fun playing games such as collect $0.50 in math. We have been listening to poetry, visualizing and inferring in reading. We have begun learning about adjectives in language and have chosen five of our favorites to create adjective flowers. In social studies we are learning about consumers and producers. In science we have been learning about the sun and the moon and created a double bubble thinking map to show how they are alike and different.

I hope you have a wonderful Spring Break with your families!
