Week 22

 Dear Parents,

This week in math we continued to order numbers to 1,200, but we were to look for a pattern and how much each number increased. Did they increase by + 10, + 20, +30, +100 or +200? This was a difficult skill, but they did great! We also had many 100 Day activities on Wednesday and took our assessment on Thursday and Friday.

In writing we have been continuing our Poetry unit as we read, write and visualize poems. They are having a wonderful time as they look for the elements of poetry in their writing! On the 100th day of school we wrote about what we think we will be like when we are 100 years old. We edited this writing and took it to final copy.

In reading/social studies we began looking at maps and globes. In future weeks we will be learning all about map skills and how to read a map. We also read some poetry and responded in writing how the poem made us feel. On the 100th day of school we listened to the story The 100th Day of School and made art using the number 100. We finished the week with a Scholastic News article called “ Count Us If You Can”. We took a comprehension check for a grade. In science we began our new unit on the Pattern of Objects in the Sky! We loved recreating the phases of the moon with a flashlight, a moon and a globe! We are tracking the phases of the moon on a moon calendar and learning the reason behind the different shapes of the moon we see in the night sky. We did an interactive moon Lesson as a class, and wrote in our science journals about what we learned. We watched a STEMscopes video and filled in information on a handout.

  • Please send in $3.00 for the Valentine Party. The money will be given to our room moms to be spent on party supplies and treats.

Week 21

 Dear Parents,

This week in math we used our reasoning skills, compared numbers, wrote how you read a comparison answer using greater than, less than, or equal to, ordered our numbers to 1,200, and found numbers that were greater than or less than a  given number.

In writing and reading we began our poetry unit. We are learning to use the elements of poetry to write our very own poems! We are reading poems, visualizing, then drawing pictures of the picture the poem painted in our minds. We are collecting our work to make a poetry book.

On Friday our focus in reading was Chinese New Year! We read a Scholastic News article, answered comprehension questions, and did many fun activities. If you visit the Panda Express at Old Denton/George Bush please thank them for their generous donation of chop sticks and fortune cookies for the entire second grade! We are making Ramen Noodles today and letting the children use chop sticks to eat them. Gung hay fat choy!

In science this week we have been finishing up our unit on natural and man made resources with a talk read, talk, write and a Brainpop Jr. presentation on the subject. We also took our assessment.

Week 20

 Dear Parents,

In math this week we continued learning how to represent numbers through 1,200 by word form, standard form, model, and expanded form. These forms have been practiced on our Friday number grids, since the beginning of the year starting with just numbers to 99. We took our middle of the year math CBA, a district assessment, to see how our students are doing understanding the TEKS taught this first half of the year.

In writing we finished up our notes and friendly letters. Your child brought home a letter to deliver to someone. Please help them give, or send their letters to the person or persons he/she chose to write to for this unit.

In reading we learned about reading a passage, then evaluating the information we read. We decided if certain sentences were fact or opinion. We read a scholastic News about Martin Luther King Jr. and took a comprehension check over the information. We also watched a Brainpop Jr. about MLK and began a project writing about our own dreams for this world.

In science we filled in charts discussing the resources we could find inside and outside our school. We then put them into the categories of man-made or natural. We went on a scavenger hunt to take 10 pictures of these resources and used the app PicCollage to show a collage of these two kinds of resources.

It was great to be back and learning together! ðŸ˜Š

Week 19B

 Dear Parents,

This was a very short week, but I’m sure the children were glad to be back to school. I know I’m glad to be back in Texas after traveling most of winter break. I cannot wait to see my class on Monday!

This week in math the students reviewed odd/even numbers by talking a bout partners and teams. They also compared larger numbers and added 100 to numbers in the 900s. In writing they learned all about New Year’s Resolutions and wrote their own. In reading they compared two different versions of The Mitten.  They did a science activity with a mitten. Ask them how many bears can fit into a mitten. In science they distinguished between natural and manmade resources as well as identifies the connection between man-made resources using Earth’s materials. They were also going to learn about conservation.
