Week 33

Dear Parents,
We all came back rested from our long weekend and ready to work! In math we finished up our geometry unit on solid and plane shapes. We enjoyed using pattern blocks and cardboard plane shapes to fill in outlines in our books. We worked with partners to problem solve many possible solutions.
In writing we worked together to research and write a report about sea lions. We are becoming serious researchers and enjoy finding out all the interesting information about this mammal. We practiced revising sentences by combining sentences, adding better adjectives or adverbs and using our own words in the sentences so we did not plagiarize. Next week we cannot wait to write our own research paper on our chosen animal.
In reading/social studies we’ve been learning about Earth Day and how we can help protect our environment by recycling, reusing, and reducing things we use in everyday life! On Friday we enjoyed eating our Barbaloot Snack ( pretzels, teddy grahams and marshmallows as we watched The Lorax! Some of us even got to play Earth Day Bingo!
In science we finished our unit over animal behaviors and characteristics. We took our assessment on Thursday. On Friday we presented the animal habitat boxes that the children brought to school. Then we went to see all the other boxes in the other second grade rooms. This was a very fast week!

Parents and student! Are you ready to see the amazing talent that CRE has to offer? Then come to the CRE talent show Thursday May 9th at 6pm in the gym! We have many amazing acts and MC’s that can’t wait to entertain you. Concessions will be available to purchase. See you there!

Week 32

Dear Parents,
This week in math we have been learning all about our three-D solids and two-D shapes. We realized that some of the plane shapes are faces on the solid figures. We learned that when we build with our solids we can make a new shape. We also are learning the names of all the plane shapes. Did you know that a dodecagon has ten sides and ten vertices?
In language some of us are finishing up our poems. We are also learning about adverbs and trying to incorporate them into our writing. They tell how, when, or where an action is done.
In reading we read a story about animal homes and filled in a graphic organizer about the story. We have also continued on with our map skills as we learned what borders are.
In science we continued to learn about animal characteristics and behaviors. We got to look at some skulls and fur of real animals and talk about how the characteristics we observed help those animals survive. We talked about hibernation as well as migration. Our butterflies were set free last Friday. We were so excited when they finally emerged from their Chrysalises! You can see pictures of this on our blog.
Field Day was rainy, but we still managed to have some indoor fun! Check out our blog to see highlights.

  • A special assignment went home last Thursday night in your child’s daily folder. We are working on an animal research project at school for the next four weeks. To go along with this paper, you and your child will research his/her chosen animal and fill out the fact page. You will then use this information to create a diorama of that animal’s habitat. There needs to be everything that animal needs to survive like a water source , vegetation and or prey for that animal. I look forward to seeing your child’s work by April 24th!

*Yearbooks- One More Chance to Order!
We have 47 yearbooks still available to purchase online. The deadline to order online at balfour.com has been extended to April 26 (or until we sell out). Yearbooks will be delivered

Last Week's Leaders!

Our butterflies have emerged from their Chrysalises!

Week 31

Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe we only have six more weeks of school. We are going to keep learning new, and interesting things right up to the end of school. In math we finished up our unit on fractions and began our unit on three dimensional figures. Your child needs to be able to count faces, edges and vertices for the solid shapes: cube, rectangular prism, triangular prism, sphere, cone, and cylinder. We had fun working with table groups examining these shapes!
In writing we finished up our poetry unit and began putting together our poetry books! We are so excited to share our work with you. Some students are ready to publish their books, but others may need to finish a poem or two. Look forward to reading these special books soon!
In social studies we’ve been learning all about our local, state and federal governments. We read about them, highlighted the important things our government does for us and wrote about them in a flip book. We learned who our Mayor, Governor, and President are. We then made a federal government tree and had to sort the jobs of the three branches of government.
In science we have been watching caterpillars in our room. They made a chrysalis about a week ago. We read that they usually take two weeks to become butterflies, but about 8 days later two of them emerged! We have been studying animal characteristics. We observed models of teeth, eyes, ears, feet, and body coverings. We discussed how these helped the animals survive. We looked at the many types of beaks that birds have. We discovered how the shape of the beak helped them catch or eat a certain type of food. We even used everyday objects like tweezers, staple removers, eye droppers, and hooks to try to pick up certain “foods”. E even created our own super animal choosing the physical characteristics that we wanted.

  • A special assignment went home Thursday night in your child’s daily folder. We are working on an animal research project at school for the next four weeks. To go along with this paper, you and your child will research his/her chosen animal and fill out the fact page. You will then use this information to create a diorama of that animal’s habitat. Week 30

Dear Parents,
We had a great week in math working with fractions. We learned that all the parts must be equal to be able to write a fraction. We learned that we can write fractions telling about all those parts depending on how many are shaded. We learned that if all the parts are shaded it equals one whole. We then had more than one whole divided into halves, fourths, or eighths. We talked about those figures as only fractions and also as wholes and fractions. We review on Monday and have our test on Tuesday.
In writing we are continuing to write poems using sensory words and picking topics that are small moments, but give us big feelings. We really enjoyed eating a rice krispie then taking that experience and writing a poem. We cannot wait to put together our books and share them with you.
In reading we are combining our learning with social studies as we discover what  our local, state and federal governments do. We are creating a flip book and learning about what  our mayor, governor, and president do to help run the government so we have services and laws that make our community a great place to live.
In science we began looking at animal characteristics. We looked at ears, eyes, teeth, feet, limbs and body coverings. We then decided how those different parts help the animals survive!
