Congratulations to our Leader of the Week, Aarya!

Week 21

Dear Parents,
It was a short week, but we accomplished much! In math we continued on looking at problem solving in many ways: beginning, middle , end, part/part/whole boxes, number lines, number sentences, and place value blocks. We are solving problems with three digit numbers, both addition and subtraction. On Friday, we celebrated the 100th day of school. When we were done with our work, we could play the game race to 100!
In reading we read The Mitten and did an investigation as a class. We read the Scholastic News Frozen Hotel  and answered comprehension questions. We read some poetry and circled words that helped us visualize each poem. We then took a selection quiz about those poems.
In Language we continued our poetry unit by writing more poems. We picked a line from our list poem and wrote a poem about that line. We then ate a Rice Krispy treat, filled out a sensory chart and wrote a poem about the treat. We will finish our poems and put them together in a book.
In science we finished up our unit on natural and manmade resources. We did a cloze procedure with the vocabulary and took our assessment on Friday. On Thursday we worked with our Science Facilitator and used the photos we took as groups to make collages in the app Pic Collage and then joined our work in Keynote to make a presentation. We had some technical difficulty, but will see this project through to the end.

Week 20

Dear parents,
This week in math we focused on problem solving. We learned how to organize action problems into a beginning, middle and end. This made it easier to use a number line to represent the problem. We also focused on comparing problems and part/part/ whole problems. Solving problems in a variety of ways helps us choose a way that makes sense to each one of us.
In reading we began learning map skills. We read the story Wild Weather . We made inferences and looked at text organization as we read. We also took a comprehension assessment. We read a Scholastic News article about Martin Luther King JR. and answered questions as well as wrote about his dream.
In Language we began our poetry unit as we wrote a poem about an object that was special to us and a list poem in which we listed things close to our heart, in which we can find poetry. We are choosing one line from our list poem to create a poem full of feeling. We will continue this unit next week.
In science our focus was on natural and manmade objects around us. We learned how they are alike, different, and how to tell which is which. We labeled things around our room and went on a walk outside to take pictures on our ipads which we will create a pic collage sort with next week.

  • Please send in your item for our 100 piece snack for 100 day next Friday. (only children 1-14 are bringing food items this time)

* Please make sure your child is practicing the math flash cards each week. The quiz will be on Fridays. As they get harder and the numbers get bigger, it will take more effort. Three quizzes will be put together for a math grade.

*Remember to order your CRE yearbook by January 24th to guarantee a copy! Order online at www.balfour.com and select our school. Yearbooks will be delivered to the school in May.

Week 19

Dear Parents,
This week in Math we reviewed all math skills we learned thus far in the first two nine weeks and took our middle of year CBA. This test is not for a grade, but will guide our instruction as we help each student master out math TEKS.
In reading we read about great leaders. We learned to evaluate the information we read and decided the differences between facts and opinions. We also read a biography about Wilma Rudolph and answered comprehension questions.
In language we learned what a New Year’s Resolution is and made some of our own. We were also busy writing notes to Garrett, a former classmate who moved several weeks ago. We really miss him. We are continuing to write letters to a person of our choice. Once they have been graded, I will make a copy for them to keep, but their letters will be delivered by hand to the person whom they wish to be the recipient. We also received a new handwriting book in which we will be learning cursive. ( just letting you know we will continue practicing, but papers will not be going home.) Your child’s handwriting book will be his/hers to keep at the end of the year.
In science we finished up our unit on natural freshwater and saltwater resources. We filled in a cloze procedure with vocabulary and took the assessment on Friday.

*It’s yearbook time! The 2019-2020 CRE yearbook is on sale now. Look in your Friday folders for more information. You can also order online at www.balfour.com and select our school. Order by January 24th to guarantee your copy when our yearbooks are delivered in May.
