WEEK 26

Dear Parents,
In math this week we finished up our unit on three digit addition/subtraction and solving word problems. Some students are still struggling with this concept. Please continue to work with your child at home and I will be pulling small groups during our win time to reinforce these concepts. We next are focusing on place value up to the number 1,200.
In reading and language we started a combined unit of research over how Communication, transportation, and recreation has changed over time. We will be learning how to decide which information is important, take notes, change our notes into good sentences, and then choose a topic to focus on as a small group research project. This will continue until after Spring Break! We continued our map skills this week by reinforcing cardinal and intermediate directions.
In science we finished our unit on weather and began our unit on the physical characteristics and needs of plants.

Students should arrive @ 5:15 P.M.

*Parents and Families—this year’s main fundraiser is the Coyote Ridge Fun Run! It’s a two-week program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on 3-3-20. Families will then gather pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps) at the Coyote Ridge Fun Run, which will happen on 3-12-20This year our goal is to raise $12,000 for The Leader in Me Program, and we need your help! We’ve asked the experts at Booster to power our fundraiser to make it easier, more profitable, and more fun.

Students will also experience an amazing character theme, MINDSPARK: WILD WEST! Booster’s most exciting theme yet combines S.T.E.A.M. skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) with character-building. While they're teaming up with the MindSpark Kids to save Dr. Shock, our students will learn five character traits that will help strengthen themselves and our world.

Donations will go toward the Leader in Me Program and the entire two-week experience. So please help our school by getting pledges from family and friends and entering them on FUNRUN.COM. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on our students at the Coyote Ridge Fun Run. Thanks so much for your support!

Week 25

Dear Parents,
This week in math we focused on addition and subtraction facts with and without regrouping. We worked many word problems whole group, as partners, and alone. We realized the are many ways to represent and solve the same problem.
In reading we read two different Scholastic News Articles. We also researched a famous African American as a Black History Month activity. We made a pyramid which we will show you at Open House. It’s important to synthesize the information and report what major accomplishments made these American so famous!
In Language we continued learning cursive writing, wrote a past narrative about our Valentine’s Day party and finished writing the final copy of our class report on Helen Keller.
In Science we continued observing the weather, paired up with a partner for a project, and began creating a season box which will also be displayed at Open House. We did a talk read, talk, write about the weather and tools we use to predict it.

So happy our second grade parents and grandparents made it to lunch and our book fair!

Week 24

Dear Parents,
This week in math we practiced solving both addition and subtraction problems with and without regrouping. Most of the children are very competent at being able to switch from addition to subtraction and remembering what to do. There are still a few children that know the steps , but will add when it is a subtraction problem or subtract when it is an addition problem. If the whole page is one type of problem they do well. Please work with your child at home to make sure they can easily switch from one to the other. This is perhaps the most difficult skill learned in second grade math. This also sets the foundation for their success next year.
In reading we learned the intermediate directions of the compass rose. We learned about some famous Americans, researched their lives and decided the two most important things five famous Americans did to create a brochure. Researching and synthesizing the information was interesting and fun!
In Language we learned about adverbs and finished up our class research paper on Helen Keller. We were inspired by her life and her message which was never let anything stop you! We are moving right along in learning how to write in cursive. They are enjoying the new handwriting books which have QR codes on each page which connects you to a short video that shows the correct way to form each letter.
In science we began our unit on weather. We started a chart where we track the weather ( temperature, wind direction, cloud cover and precipitation) for ten days. When we are finished we will look for patterns that may help us predict the weather. We saw a video showing what a meteorologist does. The children were amazed that a meteorologist looks at 19 different computers before he puts together a forecast for the daily news. We are discussing how weather affects what we wear, do, and may change the transportation we choose to use.

Week 23

Dear Parents,
This week in math we moved to solving three digit addition and subtraction problems. We are understanding why we trade because of all the hands on activities we’ve been doing with place value blocks. I can write my own word problems to represent a number sentence.
In reading we listened to a story about kindness. We made a kindness pledge. We are looking for acts of kindness to add hearts to our second grade Kindness Tree. We read a story about Helen Keller. We learned to synthesize the important ideas to get the main idea of the story. We all agreed that Helen Keller was an amazing person! Her message is that we all have great potential. Believe in yourself, never give up and you can achieve your dreams. In social studies we continued learning our map skills and learned about what it means when the groundhog does not see his shadow! We are looking forward to an early Spring! We had a fun Groundhog Day snack with a small chocolate donut with a Teddy Graham peaking out of the hole in the middle.
In language we learned about primary and secondary resources. We researched Helen Keller using several books and websites to learn more about her. We are learning how to take the important information, organize it into a report which follows the person’s timeline, create interesting sentences, and add transition words. We are writing a group report about this famous person. Next, we will be writing reports individually or with a partner.
In science we are continuing to learn about objects in the sky. We are learning that the sun and moon appear to change in the sky and the reason behind those changes. We are talking, reading and writing about all we have learned. We loved playing draw me to learn our vocabulary!

Chinese New Year Celebration

Week 22

Dear Parents,
This week in math we continued learning problem solving strategies by using sticker notation and by using a number sentence. We worked on charts practicing 10more/10 less and 100/more/100 less. Base ten blocks  were used to aid our thinking. We even had to get out a thousand cube!
In reading we continued on with our map skills learning about a map key. We also celebrated Chinese New Year on Monday. Your child got to eat long noodles for good luck. We used Chop sticks. We also each got a fortune cookie. (Panda Express donated the chop sticks and fortune cookies)Check out our blog for pictures. We continued the week learning about nonfiction text features and created a book choosing five of them.
In language we wrote our Middle of Year Writing Sample to be scored on the LISD rubric to see the growth from the beginning of the year. We then learned about articles as a special kind of adjective. We finished the week by picking adjectives that best describe ourselves.
In Science we began unit 9 Pattern of Objects in the Sky. We modeled hat happens to make the different phases of the moon using children, a tennis ball, a globe and a flashlight. We then played a lunar phase game to pick out the missing phases on the monthly chart. We ended the week with a talk, read, talk, write activity.
