Week 20

 Dear Parents,

We had a great week of Learning. In math we continued practicing ordering numbers and recognizing place value. We took the CBA over all the math skills and TEKS we have learned so far. In reading and writing we continued listening to, visualizing and writing our own poems. We will be putting these into a poetry book. In Social Studies we practiced map directions by learning about cardinal and intermediate directions. We also watched some of the live feed from the inauguration and watched President Biden sworn in. In science we began our unit on natural and manmade resources. We looked at objects inside and outside and determined in they were natural or manmade. We had fun finding that objects can be made of wood, plastic, glass, paper, or metal and posted notecards on them during a scavenger hunt in our room.

  • On Friday a special Valentines project came home- but it is homework for the parents! Look in your child’s coyote folder for directions. This will go on our bulletin board in the hallway and becomes a special keepsake for your child. Please cut out, write on and decorate the heart provided.
  • Way to go! Second grade. We earned extra technology time with our brand new set of class ipads for being the grade level that had the biggest number of students complete the habit form!

Have a great Weekend!

Week 19

 Dear Parents,

We are settling into the new semester. I am really working with students to make sure they are completing and turning in all work including homework. Thank you so much for making sure your child completes his/her Reading/ Math log on Mon.-Thurs and that he/she turns it in on Friday. Look out for math and reading homework in their blue folders Mon-Thurs. as well. In math this week we decomposed numbers, ordered numbers and compared the value of numbers. In reading and writing we have been working on a unit on poetry. We have visualized poems as we listened to them, written our own poems and learned about the different elements that poetry has. In science we finished up our unit on natural Sources of freshwater and saltwater. In social studies, we focused on Martin Luther King Jr. We learned why we celebrate his life on Monday.

Week 18

 Dear Parents,

It was so wonderful to see your children again and get back to work! We are now a class of 17. Miss Herrera has become our third in person teacher in second grade. Our 4 virtual students who joined us last nine weeks have moved into her classroom. They were all very excited to see each other as well! In math we began our unit on numbers to 1,200. We learned how to say them, write them in word form, expanded form, standard form and make a model. In reading we set up our reading groups, seating charts and swapped out our books. If your child has any of the reading books at home, please see that they are returned on Monday. We also took our January istation test. A copy of the report will go home next Friday in your child’s coyote folder with his/her report card if you have chosen a paper copy on Skyward. In writing we learned that a resolution is a promise we make to ourselves about getting better at something or helping others with something we are already good at doing. We then wrote about our New Year’s resolutions. In reading we listened to the story The Mitten by Jan Brett. We filled out a story map together and independently worked on a sequencing activity. We also conducted an experiment with a mitten. Ask your child what we did! In Science we began our unit on fresh and salt water sources. We set up our unit and played a SWAT game identifying the many sources. We also observed samples of fresh and salt water and recorded the properties of each that we discovered in our observation. It was a quick two days, but we are ready for a full week of school next week! We may even have some snow this weekend! I know all the children are keeping their fingers crossed.

  • Next week our reading log becomes a reading and math log. We are adding addition practice on Mondays-Thursdays for 5-10 minutes a night to help us learn our math facts. Quizes will be given on Fridays.
