Welcome to my blog! My name is Beth Carpenter! I am a 2nd grade teacher at Coyote Ridge Elementary. I majored in Early Childhood Education and have taught for 22 years. I have taught grades K- 3 which gives me a unique ability to know where my second graders fit within those grades. Teaching is more than a profession to me, it is a calling. Week 32

Dear Parents,
In Science we began our unit on the life cycles of insects. All our experiences at LISDOLA have really given us a lot of background knowledge. We have been continuing to learn about polygons in math. We never knew there were so many plane shapes! The children are becoming experts at counting the sides and vertices! We continued to learn about synonyms and antonyms and played synonym matching as well as a who has game that helped us practice both sets of words. In reading we read Violet’s Music  and filled out a graphic organizer about the story on music notes! In Social studies we will continue practicing map skills and create a Bell Book about all our American Symbols and Landmarks until the end of the year. We have begun our testing for end of year skills. DRA testing started this week. I am so proud of my excellent readers!

*Don’t forget about Swim Week. Make sure your child has everything he/she needs for this fun activity at the Aquatic Center in the Colony next Monday- Thursday

* Watch for an important information packet about the Animal Habitat Project. It will be in the folder on May 6th.

Week 31

Dear Parents,
We continued this week learning about solid shapes in math. We counted vertices, edges, and faces. We compared these three dimensional shapes and said how they were alike and different. We finished compound words and began talking about synonyms. We read the story the Lorax and wrote about how we might save the Earth by keeping it clean! In science we discussed how an animal’s or plant’s environment can decide whether they might thrive or perish. We have begun a Bell Book in Social Studies as we learn more about our Country’s landmarks, monuments, and symbols.
We enjoyed our visit to LISDOLA on Wednesday. The children enjoyed seeing this outdoor center and discovering what animals, plants, and insects live there. We had a caterpillar turn into a chrysalis in our classroom and emerge a beautiful butterfly! We were happy to release it yesterday in such a wonderful habitat! I wish you could have heard the children as they waved at the butterfly and said goodbye. It was a very sweet moment! Check out our blog to see many pictures of the learning activities we shared.
* Please Look for the Swimming permission Form. We need these back by Tuesday.
*Please send in a plain, white pillow case needed for each student in second grade for a special keep sake project
PLEASE SEND THESE IN BY Monday! There is much prep work to do to get these done before the end of school. I also will need two more volunteers that can help at home with tracing a poem on 6 of the pillow cases. Mrs. Lundrigan has already offered to do six of them. I will send everything you need to help us home with your child next week and you will have a week to get them back to me. Just respond to this e-mail if you can help.

In language we are learning about compound words and how to write a story with a bold beginning. In science we finished up our unit on the basic needs of plants and animals and began looking at the impact of the environment to living organisms. In social studies we have begun to look at famous landmarks and American Symbols. There are many important notes below. Make sure to check that each item has been turned in.

Third Nine Week's Quality Coyotes!

Week 29

Dear Parents,
We had another great week of school. It all started with our end of the third nine weeks assembly. Our two Quality Coyotes were given a certificate at the assembly. Congratulations to Izel and Milan! You can see their pictures on our classroom blog. We continued learning about fractions and are gaining more confidence. We just need to make sure we follow directions to divide our shapes into equal pieces and read the questions carefully to see what they are asking.
We finished our Science Unit on Objects in the Sky and began setting up our next unit called Basic Needs of Plants and Animals. We actually have a caterpillar inside a chrysalis right now, changing into a butterfly in our butterfly cage!
In reading we read a nonfiction text called Super Storms. We practiced looking for the main idea on each page and the supporting details. We chose one type of storm and created a main idea mobile.
In language we finished up learning about contractions and began learning about adverbs and how the can describe the action words in our writing to make it more interesting!
In Social studies we continued to learn about what our local, state, and United States Government does! Look at the attachment above for a Love and Logic PTA sponsored talk you may attend.

* Look in your child’s Coyote Folder for information about a plain, white pillow case needed for each student in second grade for a special keep sake project

*Field Day is coming up this next month and I have told your child what color T- shirt he/she should wear on that day. The colors are: yellow, red, blue, or green

*I sent home the 2016-2017 Student Enrollment Form in your child’s coyote folder last Friday. Please fill it out as soon as possible and return it to school. I have only received about half of them back as of yet.
