Week 19B

 Dear Parents,

    This was a very short week, but I’m sure the children were glad to be back to school. I know I’m glad to be back in Texas after traveling most of winter break. I cannot wait to see my class on Monday!

This week in math the students reviewed odd/even numbers by talking a bout partners and teams. They also compared larger numbers and added 100 to numbers in the 900s. In writing they learned all about New Year’s Resolutions and wrote their own. In reading they compared two different versions of The Mitten.  They did a science activity with a mitten. Ask them how many bears can fit into a mitten. In science they distinguished between natural and manmade resources as well as identifies the connection between man-made resources using Earth’s materials. They were also going to learn about conservation.

Week 19

 Dear Parents, 

    It was an exciting week at CRE! The children were finishing up their presents for you, making their own wrapping paper and card. We also had a 5 days before winter break treat each day. Today they come home with my gift, a chapter book! We had our movie day on Wednesday and watched the Polar Express while eating popcorn and drinking hot chocolate in our comfy pajamas.. We had our fabulous Winter party run by our room moms, Amber Rice and Yessidey Stevens. Thank you so much for making their party so memorable! Thank you also to the parents who came to visit our room during the party. You made it very special for our class. On Friday we had our annual sing along and recognition rally!

      Even with all the excitement we accomplished lots of learning this week. In math we reviewed for our assessment over place value, ordering and comparing numbers and placing numbers on a number line. We took our assessment on Tuesday.

        In language we have been working on personal communication writing. We firat learned how to write a note and now are writing friendly letters. We revised and edited them this week and will write the final copy upon our return.

         In reading we read and compared Gingerbread Baby with The Gingerbread Man. We discussed how they were alike and how they were different. We read a scholastic News article called “ Holiday Bakery” and took a comprehension check. 

          In science we wrapped up our learning with a talk read talk write activity about natural water sources. We took our assessment on Wednesday. We are still having fun playing a game where the children are challenged to recognize pictures of water sources by their description.

     I want to say that I am overwhelmed by your kindness since the passing of my mother. You also spoiled me this Christmas with your thoughtful gifts and messages. I absolutely love my job and cherish each day I spend guiding and teaching your children! I wish you all many blessings this winter break and throughout the New Year!

Week 18

 Dear Parents,

     It was great to get back to be with my class. They did a great job while I was gone ( due to the passing of my mother) and worked hard with Mrs. Stevens who is a veteran, second grade teacher from Coyote Ridge. They were in excellent hands! In math this week we focused on place value. We represented numbers with sheets, strips, and singles with pictures, then showed what would happen if we added or subtracted 10 or 100. Then we tried it doing the change mentally. Hey caught on quickly! We also found missing numbers on a number line. They were well prepared to do this. Last they had to place numbers on an open number line. We would find a mid-point between two numbers and then place the numbers in order from least to greatest where they should be on the open number line. An open number line has only a beginning number and an ending number. The children placed numbers between them.

      In writing we finished our papers explaining why a certain holiday is our favorite one. These are on display in the hallway if you come to our holiday party next week. We then started our unit on writing messages and letters. This class loves to write to people they love! They will deliver their messages and letters once they are in final copy form. 

      In reading we learned all about nonfiction features and read Wilma Rudolph. We searched for these features in that story as well as many other nonfiction books. On Friday we read a story about Gingerbread houses and took a comprehension check.

        In science we have been learning all about natural bodies of water. We learned the names of several fresh and salt water sources and played a SWAT game to practice knowing the visual representations of these water sources. We looked at examples of fresh and salt water, drew, described and compared them. We listened to some brainpop Jr. information and on Friday we did a lalk read, talk write activity.

Week 17

Week 16

 Dear Parents,

    This week in math we continued learning about the concept of multiplication as repeated addition. We drew equal groups to solve word problems. We learned that the first number in a multiplication sentence represents how many groups there are and the second number stands for how many objects are in each group, thus we draw very different pictures for 2X6 and 6X2. We also began division as splitting up objects equally into groups. Lastly we viewed division as repeated subtraction. Our assessment was taken on Thursday and on Friday we practiced what we learned by doing a fun activity with Cookie Crisp cereal. We practiced both multiplication and division.

    In writing we worked on some special Thanksgiving gifts for you! I know you will treasure them! We also continued our writing process to finish up any pieces that are yet unfinished. We go for quality- and add the grades when all are turned in.

     In reading we listened to a Brainpop Jr. about the first Thanksgiving. We discussed the questions ahead of time so that we knew what information we were listening for. We read a Scholastic News article called  Time for thanks and discussed what we are grateful for. We listened to Thanksgiving at the Tarleton’s and discussed our own family traditions. We listened to A Turkey for Thanksgiving, completed a story map and answered questions about the story. On Friday we watched Arthur’s Thanksgiving.

    In science we took our assessment over position and movement and began our unit about rocks. We are having fun being scientists observing our rock and writing about their physical properties. We then compared our rock with a partner’s rock to fill out a double bubble map. We finished up the week with a talk/read/talk/write activity!

Week 15

 Dear Parents,

    This week in math we began by building with blocks. We built apartments that had the same number of rooms on each floor. The children built and then filled in a chart showing how many rooms were in the building when it had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 floors! Then we began the concept of multiplication as repeated addition. On Friday we used just multiplication sentences.

    In writing some of us are finishing up our imaginative stories as we begin our explain why we like our favorite holiday paper. We narrowed done our favorite holiday on a circle map, then used a flow map to show 4 reasons why we like that holiday. We will continue working on it through next week.

      In reading we read a book review written by a student. We will be making our own reviews as a choice during guided reading. We read the story Going Places and took our comprehension check on Thursday. On Friday we read a Scholastic News Article called “Sky High Veterans!”

       In science we had many experiments with objects going down a ramp. We tracked their movements as curved lines, straight lines, slides, rolls, and spins. We took our unit assessment on Friday.

Week 14

  Dear Parents,

       Unfortunately I ended up with the flu and was out Monday-Wednesday. I really missed my class but was able to secure a former second grade CRE teacher as my sub so I know for sure they were in expert hands. In math we continued with measurement. We measured lengths in metrics units. We used reasoning while measuring and measured 2 to 3 segments to get a total measurement. We reviewed and took our assessment on Friday.

         In writing we revised our imaginative paper after seeing examples of how we could vary our sentence length and add details of showing emotions or character gestures. We learned about verbs- present, past, and future tenses. We then made sure our stories stayed in one verb tense. On Thursday and Friday we learned about who veterans are and how we are soon going to honor them on Veterans Day. We wrote an acrostic poem using the word veteran.

         In reading we listened to the story I Need a Monster  on Monday and made a story map. We also read A Crow, a Mouse, a Lion, Oh My! We looked at the elements of drama and took a reading checkpoint over it. We looked at figurative language in the story Hollywood Chicken.

          In Science we did a talk, read, talk, write activity about magnets. We used marbles and paint to show how we could apply force in different ways to change the motion of a marble. On Thursday and Friday we experimented with several objects to describe their motion down a ramp. Did they spin, roll, or slide? We also looked at the physical characteristics of the objects and discussed how they affected the movement.

 

*We are completely out of classroom snacks. If you would like to donate some individually packaged goldfish for the children who forget theirs it would be appreciated.
