Welcome to my blog! My name is Beth Carpenter! I am a 2nd grade teacher at Coyote Ridge Elementary. I majored in Early Childhood Education and have taught for 22 years. I have taught grades K- 3 which gives me a unique ability to know where my second graders fit within those grades. Teaching is more than a profession to me, it is a calling. I love to help light the fire of curiosity to help all my students become lifelong learners!

Week 36

Dear Parents,

This week in Math we took our end of year assessment and began our last Math Unit of the year! It is so hard to believe this year will soon be over. Our last math unit lines up with our social studies unit that is all about economics. We are still getting paid 1 more week for our hard work and have been saving our money for our end of year movie and snack party. If you would like to donate any bags of candy to the classroom for this party it would be appreciated. I will purchase all the salty treats. 😊

In writing we finished our research paper about our chosen animal. The children will read their papers and present their habitat dioramas on the 17th. I can’t wait to see what they created.

In social studies we learned about landforms and made a landform booklet. We read a Scholastic News article called The Grand Canyon and watched a video about landforms.

In reading we read At Home in the Wild, a collection of poems about living organisms, and drew a picture of a mental image one of the poems created in our minds. We also read the story, Goal , and watched for details that helped us synthesize the information to better understand the story.

In science we set up unit 14, Factors of the Environment. We listened to a read aloud about hibernation and tried to eat some blueberries that were frozen in an ice cube to represent how difficult it would be in the winter to find food. We matched up scenario cards that gave examples of why animals have certain behaviors due to their environment. We looked at tree rings to discover how the environment could affect the growth of a tree. We also got to play a fun simulation game. We used a Venn diagram to sort animal cards and place them on the diagram according to the factors that might influence their behavior.

From Our Librarian, Mrs. Hernandez:

Hello CRE families!

I would like to start by saying thank you for all the support that you give the library in creating responsible library users!  This week was the last week to check out books!  Next week, the students will visit the library to return all books and learn about Summer Reading Challenges and opportunities happening around our local libraries!  Students Pk-2nd grade will come in on Thursday (5/12) and students 3-5th grade will come in on Friday (5/13).  Please help your child remember to have their book in their backpack and ready to be returned.  I will be sending notices on Tuesday, May 17th to all students who still have books out.  Please reach out to me if you know that your child has a missing book.  You have the option of paying for a replacement with cash/check (please make is payable to Coyote Ridge ES) or with a credit card online.  If you choose to pay online please email me so I can add the fine to Revtrak.  I hope that you guys are geared up to have a great summer full of reading and relaxation!
