Dear Parents,
This week in math we focused on representing three digit subtraction problems with a model, then solving it by using our beginning/middle /end strategy, writing a number sentence, fillling in a part /part/whole square ,representing it on a number line and lastly solving it by regrouping. We learned that when we understand what a problem is asking us to do, we can easily solve it. We also practiced the skill of mentally adding and subtracting 100 from a three digit number.
In writing we began our unit on researching and writing a biography as a class. We are learning how to sift through a variety of resources to find important facts about the lives of Benjamin Franklin and Helen Keller. We are ordering those facts in a timeline order. We will learn how to write those facts into interesting sentences. We were amazed at what we learned about these two amazing people. This is a process that will continue for the next couple of weeks.
In social studies we learned about symbols on a map key and completed a practice paper reading and interpreting a map. In reading we read the story Wild Weather. As we read, we paid attention to clues within the text so that we were able to make inferences. We are really good at finding these clues so that we can answer questions that are not directly stated in the text.
In science we began our unit on weather. We are beginning to learn what a meteorologist does and the tools he uses to predict the weather. We took a look at each tool and learned its function.
A big thank you to Amber Rice for making our Valentines Day party so special. Thank you as well to the parents who were able to attend! I appreciate all you do!
