Week 37

 Dear Parents,

This week just flew by, but oh, what a celebration of learning it has been. In math we finished up our last chapter on economics and learned all about lending, saving, producers and consumers. We used graphs and word problems to solve addition and subtraction problems using this information. We learned about people who were responsible and others who were irresponsible. This discussion led us to the fact that you need to be very careful who you lend things to. Have they proven they can be responsible?

In writing we were able to share our research paper about our animal that we wrote at school. Thank you all for helping your child make their habitat boxes to go with their paper. They were so proud of all their hard work. We are working now on a 2nd grade memory book that will help us remember all our friends and fun in second grade.

In reading/social studies we listened to the book Me on the Map and created our own version of that book. We read a Scholastic News article that compared a jellyfish and an octopus. We also listened to the story, Cool Ali then went outside to draw with chalk like she did on a very hot day. On Friday we read another Scholastic News article called Catch. It told us all about the history of a frisbee.

In science we finished up our unit on animal behaviors and how their environment effects them. We listened to a Brainpop Jr. on hibernation, described how temperature and precipitation affect both plants and animals, played a concept review game, and took an assessment.

Hello CRE families!  Thank you so much for all of your support this school year!  Our students have learned to be responsible library users and to use reading as a form of entertainment and not a chore.  Please help me continue to foster a love for reading!  With that in mind, I wanted to share the Summer Reading Challenge that I shared with students today!  The front is our CRE Reading Challenge where students will read and cross out the boxes they complete.  If this is returned to me on Meet the Teacher night or the first week of school, students will be eligible for a prize.  The back is where you can find information on reading challenges and other fun summer events around town.  Scan the QR codes to learn all about them!

We are still missing 30 books that have not been returned.  If your child has an overdue notice, please help them locate the book or reach out to me about taking care of the fine.  Fines can be paid with cash/check (payable to CRE) or with credit online.  If you choose to pay online please let me know so I can set it up on Revtrak.  I encore all 5th grade students to clear their account before moving into middle school.

Thank you again for all your support!  Have a great summer!

Week 36

Dear Parents,

This week in Math we took our end of year assessment and began our last Math Unit of the year! It is so hard to believe this year will soon be over. Our last math unit lines up with our social studies unit that is all about economics. We are still getting paid 1 more week for our hard work and have been saving our money for our end of year movie and snack party. If you would like to donate any bags of candy to the classroom for this party it would be appreciated. I will purchase all the salty treats. ðŸ˜Š

In writing we finished our research paper about our chosen animal. The children will read their papers and present their habitat dioramas on the 17th. I can’t wait to see what they created.

In social studies we learned about landforms and made a landform booklet. We read a Scholastic News article called The Grand Canyon and watched a video about landforms.

In reading we read At Home in the Wild, a collection of poems about living organisms, and drew a picture of a mental image one of the poems created in our minds. We also read the story, Goal , and watched for details that helped us synthesize the information to better understand the story.

In science we set up unit 14, Factors of the Environment. We listened to a read aloud about hibernation and tried to eat some blueberries that were frozen in an ice cube to represent how difficult it would be in the winter to find food. We matched up scenario cards that gave examples of why animals have certain behaviors due to their environment. We looked at tree rings to discover how the environment could affect the growth of a tree. We also got to play a fun simulation game. We used a Venn diagram to sort animal cards and place them on the diagram according to the factors that might influence their behavior.

Week 35

 Dear Parents,

This week in math we continued looking at and making bar graphs and pictographs. We had fun choosing a question, asking our classmates the question while making a tally chart, then transferring that information to a bar graph. Last we analyzed our graph by answering questions. We took our assessment on Thursday.

In writing we are having fun researching our chosen animal. We researched what they looked like and where they lived and drafted these sections of our informational text. I hope all is going well with the making of their habitat box at home. These are due May 17th. Let me know if you have any questions.

In reading/social studies we learned about our seven continents and our 5 oceans as we colored and labeled a map. We read the story Sea Otter Pups and used our skills of monitoring and clarifying as we read. We did very well on our selection test.

We also learned about Cinco de Mayo and completed a booklet.

In science we have been learning about food chains. We learned that plants are producers that get eaten by animals and insects that are consumers. We talked about the transfer of energy and finally how that energy is broken down by decomposers.

Week 34

 Dear Parents,

In math we have been reading graphs, both bar and pictographs. We have been interpreting the information and generating our own questions. In math today we were able to begin an individual graphing projects.

In language we have continued working on our group research project about the Great White Shark. We will finish this up by Monday and begin researching our individually chosen animals.

In reading/ social studies we labeled  map of North America, Red an article about a Red Panda all while looking for the main idea of the article and the supporting details. We read two scholastic News articles and practiced going back to the text to find the answers to the comprehension questions.

Science was REALLY exciting this week as our butterflies came out of their chrysalis. One actually came out right before our eyes! We finished up unit 13 and took our assessment on Friday.

  • Please take note of an important project coming home. Your child chose an animal that they would like to research at home and at school. At school they will be writing an animal report. At home you will help your child make a diorama out of a shoebox. The habitat should include all the things the chosen animal needs to survive, water, air, food sources, etc. I will attach two photos above of  past submissions. If you need supplies like colored paper, let me know and I can send it home. If your child needs any colored pictures printed , I can also do that here. I do have a few shoeboxes up for grabs if you do not have one at home. Full directions went home today in your child’s coyote folder.

Week 33

       Dear Parents,

This week in math we continued looking at our solid shapes. We looked at the faces and flat surfaces and told what plane shapes they were. We also combined solid shapes to make new shapes or just larger slid of the same shape. We reviewed both plane and solid shapes and took our assessment over this unit.

In writing we are using a RAN Chart as a way to write what we think we know about sharks. We are researching using multiple resources to confirm our facts. We are also writing down what we are wondering about these 20 foot fish!

In social studies we continued learning about Texas and our neighboring states and country. We learned about Earth day and ways to save our Earth. We wrote about what we can do to help our planet.

In science we were so excited to see our caterpillars( Larvae Stage) turn into their chrysalis ( Pupa Stage). We are learning about each of the stages of the life cycles of both butterflies and grasshoppers. We then compared how they are alike and different.

Week 32

 Dear Parents,

This was a fast week with just four days of school and two days of swimming, but we managed to have a lot of wonderful learning opportunities as well as fun! In Math we learned about our 3-D shapes. We learned what shapes have edges, vertices, and faces. We learned that objects that do not roll have faces and objects that roll may have flat surfaces. We learned the names of our 3 -D shapes and how to sort them by a rule.

In writing we took our procedural paper to final copy. There was a choice of how to publish it. It could have been a picture page with the steps, a friendly letter telling someone the steps or a how to do something list.

In reading we began Fairytales. We read Jack and the Beanstalk. Children were challenged to retell the story with a concise beginning, middle and end. Many of my students earned their $5.00! We also read a Scholastic News about Jane Goodall who changed how we think about Chimps. We tied this in with our science unit as we looked at animal body coverings, and skulls. The skulls taught our observing second graders about what size eyes an animal had as well as the kind of teeth. We know that the larger the eyes and ears an animal has, the better they can see and hear. We know too, whether an animal is a carnivore, omnivore, or herbivore by examining the teeth. We are excited because our butterfly larvae have arrived and are growing each day. Soon they will be turning into a chrysalis! We can’t wait to watch the whole process!

This week in math we continued our unit on Two-D shapes. We learned all the names of the polygons with 3-12 sides. We counted vertices and sides. We sorted our shapes, created shapes and made new shapes.

In writing we continued working on our how to papers, revised them for prepositions as well as time order words and edited them. We will choose how to publish them.

In social studies we had a review about directions on a map and what kinds of stores sell goods and services. We also read a scholastic news that told us how valuable our community service workers are and how they keep us safe and healthy.

In Science we began our unit on animals, their basic needs and their physical characteristics. We are examining different animal body parts and talking about how those parts have been adapted to help the animal survive.
